The Top 4 Part-Time Jobs for MomsIf being a full time Mom isnt enough for you, youre not alone. And thats O.K. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) While theres enough work for Moms to go around, its simply not fulfilling enough for many, which has many Moms looking for something else.Having a side gig thats separate from your regular Mom life is the perfect antidote. Part time work can be fun, social, and a way for you to have your own identity (again). If youre looking to itch the scratch and go earn some cash weve got you covered We rounded up the best parte time jobs for Moms lined up1. As a worker, youd be employed by the agency and then loaned out to their customers. Depending on what your current skills are, youd be placed within an area of interest and ability to you. Agencies are fantastic for Moms becaus e they provide flexible hours, diverse work tasks, and new (and exciting) work environments. The best part about staffing agencies is that the mixture of work, environments, and tasks equates to increased skills, networking, and overall exposure which looks great on the resume.3. Volunteering is a great option for Moms because again, you can set your own hours and choose your level of commitment. As Moms we have a limited bandwidth so its crucial to identify exactly how much time is enough to be away from your family. If you can find a volunteer opportunity that links back to your family like sports, commu nity, or arts then all the better.4. Fairygodboss Discussion Boards Because Work Is Personal

Fairygodboss Discussion Boards Because Work Is Personal Today were excited to launch a new community feature on ur site Fairygodboss discussion boards. We already have a place where you leave some pretty moving Confessions, but you told us you wanted a place to actually interact to share and hear from other women on workplace and personal topics.Fairygodboss discussion boards are exactly that a small group of women have already participated in a beta version, and theyve left some great examples of questions, comments, and answers on a range of topics from how to negotiate a raise and what to wear to a tech start-up interview, to how to deal with sexual harassment in the workplace and actually practice equal parenting.Sometimes we have never even thought about the stuff that shows up on these boards. For example, one woman writes, Does anyone take a digital break over the weekend or found a way to tell your manager that you wont really be available on the weekends to answer emails qui ckly? I want to have the conversation but not sure how to start it without looking badWhile much of our lives are rightly divided between the personal and professional (eg.Facebook for the personal and LinkedIn for the professional), sometimes drawing a bright line doesnt seem very realistic. According to one survey, 40% of employees have had a romantic relationship with a colleague. And a recent poll of Fairygodboss users suggests that we have close friendships at work. A majority of you told us that you would confide in a colleague at work if something uncomfortable happened to you there. In general, we think this is a good thing (well, maybe not the office romance part unless youre Michelle and Barack Obama). Being able to bring our whole selves at work means that we spend less energy compartmentalizing and hiding things about ourselves that we fear may be socially unacceptable. For example, I used to work in the private equity industry where I observed that it welches pretty rare for women (or men) to talk openly about their children beyond cursory mentions. I didnt have children at the time (I didnt even have a boyfriend then). But I clearly read the social cues about what was OK and what was not. Based on what I saw, I certainly wasnt about to volunteer details about my personal life, marital status, nor plans to have children in the future.Ive talked to many women about the intersection of work and their personal lives and discovered that things are way messier than two neat professional versus personal boxes when it comes to the issues women face at work. We want and deserve to be taken seriously in the office, to be promoted and to become leaders. However, we dont want to hide the fact that we have personal lives and arent always tough executive types with our friends and children. It can be very stressful and emotionally draining to constantly monitor ourselves and change personas.Life and work can both be complicated sometimes. For example, even if y ou work at a very inclusive, diverse company, you may still feel nervous about telling your managers when you become pregnant. Theres just no telling whether youll be judged (even if benignly) about whether and how your priorities may change. Even anticipating those judgments can shape the way we see ourselves and our choices. All of this is to say that we want to channel the amazing insights that so many of you in this community have shared with us off-line, in your emails, and conversations with us. We believe in the power of our community to support women, help you realize youre not alone, and provide super practical tips. Join our womens discussion board and please let us know if you have any ideas or feedbackFairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.Join us by reviewing your employer

bestWe all know maternity leave (and parental leave as a whole) in the US pales in comparison to the rest of the world. I usually scream when someone compares us to Swedens amazing government funded leave package, and I usually cry when that person tells me in the same sentence, that the USs lack of leave funding is on par with Papua New Guinea. Im nearly eight months pregnant with my second child - so my reactions are particularly visceral these days. That said, maternity leave in the US isnt a total horror show. On the state and city level, strides are being made. Im proud to be in New York where we introduced a parental leave package in January. (I wont be taking this package, but thats for another blog). San Francisco also has a leave law thats supplemental to the state package. And on top of state and city moves, were also seeing more of the private sector invest in parental leave to retain employees. Ive pasted a partial chart The New York Times ran that breaks down company le ave packages. The whole chart is here in an article that was written in response to Walmart and Starbucks extending their leave packages in January. A few PowerToFly partners are listed at the top of the chart, including Amazon (follow Amazon on PowerToFly to get updates on events, openings, more).Read the chart carefully because there are still discrepancies between salaried and hourly works. Also, despite positive news that shows massive corporations recognize they need to invest in parents, we need to still remember that only twelve percent of the private sector provides paid leave. David Wilkinson

David Wilkinson David Wilkinson David WilkinsonDavid Wilkinson (1771 1852) may not be a household name, but without his work the machine tool industry would not likely be what it is today.Learning in his fathers metal shops from an early age where Oziel Wilkinson, a successful blacksmith by trade, initially produced hand-cut screws and large iron nails, son David became a talented mechanic. In 1794, David Wilkinson designed a screw-cutting lathe with a slide rest that allowed the tool to work at a constant speed and guided the cutting tool properly so that it produced an accurate thread. Some believe his design welches based on 500-year-old drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, who left behind a collection of sketches of prototypes for machine tools long before they were ever built.Wilkinsons work with the screw-cutting lathe and other devices had significant implications for an emerging textile industry. An inscription at the National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark Wilkinson Mil l in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, calls him the father of the American machine tool industry. The Wilkinson Mill is now parte of a national landmark, the Slater Mill Historic Site, a museum complex designed to provide an understanding of the American Industrial Revolution.David Wilkinsons screw-cutting lathe, 1798 (from American Machinist). While the screw-cutting lathe, patented by Wilkinson in 1798, is what he is best-known for, other work during his lifetime provided advancements in other areas, including in steam power generation. Two years after designing the lathe, he built a steam engine and used it to propel a boat from near Providence to Pawtucket and back again, probably the first steamship in America. He also produced a large general purpose lathe in 1806 that became the foundation of the American tool industry and built some of the first power looms.Interestingly, it is believed that Wilkinson did not generate much income from his lathe, but an 1848 report from the Committee o n Military Affairs to the U.S. Senate called the invention vastly important to the government in its arsenals and armories and indispensable for making firearms.Wilkinson was born in Smithfield, Rhode Island, in 1771, the fourth of 10 children. In the 1780s, Oziel Wilkinson moved his family to Pawtucket and began making anchors for the emerging shipbuilding industry. The textile industry just in its infancy came to the Wilkinsons for their skills too. While Oziel made the iron work for a cotton carding machine, David forged and ground spindles for a spinning jenny. The grinding machine he built may have been the first centerless grinder, which offers benefits for certain types of grinding. The Wilkinson shop, powered by water from the Blackstone River, is one of the most important landmarks in the history of American mechanical engineering. There, screws made by the Wilkinsons were used in the manufacture of paper, in clothiers presses and in oil mills. When Samuel Slater, known as th e Father of the Industrial Revolution, became interested in building a textile spinning mill in Pawtucket in 1790, it was the Wilkinsons he turned to for the machinery for the mill, and when the Wilkinsons built their own mill in 1810, it was very near Slaters cotton mill. Slaters relationship with the Wilkinsons became much more than business when he married Davids sister Hannah. However, during a depression in the textile industry in 1829, Wilkinson was forced to sell his mill. The building was used by various industries until it was restored in the early 1970s and in 1977 was designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by ASME.David Wilkinson left Rhode Island and eventually died in 1852 in Caledonia Springs, Ontario.Nancy Giges is an independent writer.Wilkinsons work with the screw-cutting lathe and other devices had significant implications for an emerging textile industry.

7 things deeply intuitive people do differently

7 things deeply intuitive people do differently7 things deeply intuitive people do differentlySteve Jobs once said that intuition is mora powerful than intellect. As it turns out, Jobs welches onto something, and the scientific community backs him up. It seems that weve been giving intuition far too little respect. In a Salk Institute study, participants were asked to play a card game where they pulled cards from two different decks. The decks were rigged so that one would win more often than the other, but the participants didnt know that- at least, not overtly. It took about 50 cards for participants to consciously realize that the decks were different and about 80 to figure out what that difference was.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHowever, what was really interesting was that it only took about 10 cards for their palms to start sweating slightly every time they reached for a card from the losing deck. It was about that same time that they started subconsciously favoring the winning deck. While thats all very interesting in a clinical setting, you have to ask yourself if it holds true in real life. Apparently, it does. When it comes to making major decisions, your intuition can matter just as much as your intellect. In one study, car buyers who relied on careful analysis of all of the available information were happy with their purchases about 25% of the time, while buyers who made quicker, more intuitive purchases were happy with their purchases about 60% of the time.Intuition comes from the primitive brain its an artifact of the early days of man when the brains ability to detect hidden dangers ensured our survival. These days, we use this capability so little that we dont know how to listen to it properly.Whether you listen to it or not, your intuition is healthy and functioning. If you want to make better decisions in life, youd do well to brush up on your intuition skills. You can start by emulating some of the habits of highly intuitive people. They slow down enough to hear their inner voiceBefore you can pay attention to your intuition, you first have to be able to hear it amid the cacophony of your busy life. You have to slow down and listen, which often requires solitude. Taking some time away from the everyday, even something as brief as going for a walk, is a great way to turn up the volume of your intuition. They follow their inner voiceOne of the primary reasons that some people are more intuitive than others is that they actually listen to their gut feeling instead of dismissing or doubting it. And that doesnt mean that they ignore their analytical mind and their critical thinking skills theres a difference between using reason as a system of checks and balances and using it to talk yourself out of what your intuition knows to be true. They practice empathic accuracyId probably lose you if I said that highly intuitive peo ple read minds, so Ill use the scientific term empathic accuracy. Its not magic its an intuitive awareness of what other people are thinking and feeling, using cues such as body language and tone of voice. Its an extremely powerful form of empathy that helps foster deep connections with other people. They practice mindfulnessMindfulness sounds even more New-Agey than trusting your intuition, but its really just a fancy term for focusing on being in the moment. Mindfulness is a great technique to filter out all of the distractions in your environment- and your brain. When you do that, you can hear your intuition loud and clear. They nurture their creativityDid you ever have one of those paint-by-number kits when you were a kid? Talk about turning art into a science- all you have to do is put the right color in the right little space. You may end up with a pretty painting, but the only intuition involved is guessing what colors youre supposed to use in those really tiny spaces. No paint -by-numbers kit in the world can make a skilled artist create something as novel and monumental as the Sistine Chapel or the Mona Lisa. The missing ingredient is intuition. And, just as intuition is the secret ingredient in creativity, being intentionally creative strengthens your use of intuition. They trust their gutHave you ever made a decision and immediately started to feel sick, maybe even kind of clammy? Well, that affective experience is the bodys way of informing you that the decision your analytic mind came to is at odds with your instinct. They analyze their dreamsIf you accept the science that demonstsatzs the power of intuition, its not much of a leap to accept that our dreams are often manifestations of intuition. Sure, sometimes dreams are nonsense, but they often try to tell us something. Intuitive people dont just think, Wow, that was a weird dream they ask themselves, Where did that come from, and what can I take away from it?Bringing It All TogetherThe science is cl ear intuition is a powerful force of the mind that can help us to make better decisions. Fortunately, intuition is a skill that you can hone by practicing the habits of highly intuitive people. How would you rate your intuition? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.This article first appeared on Linkedin.
